Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is considered a retinol alternative for sensitive skin. Bakuchiol has soothing properties which help to comfort skin and minimise issues associated with sensitivity and reactivity. Bakuchiol upregulates collagen synthesis and youthful enzyme activity within the skin which can improve signs of solar ageing. Much like retinol, bakuchiol can work to increase the skin’s cell turnover, meaning that dryer, older and discoloured skin cells are “shed”, leading the way for fresh, new skin cells to take their place. The result is a brighter complexion.
 

Alpha Arbutin

Alpha arbutin is a natural compound that exfoliates the skin’s top layer, removing dead cells and promoting smoother skin. Alpha arbutin is more stable and less prone to degradation when exposed to light or air. This stability allows for a longer shelf life and more consistent effectiveness in skincare products. Alpha arbutin is known to inhibit melanin production (the pigment responsible for making the skin appear dull and discoloured) and activity of the enzyme, tyrosinase (which is involved in melanin synthesis). By reducing this activity, alpha arbutin helps to limit the production of melanin, leading to a more even and brighter complexion. Arbutin is a natural derivative of hydroquinone that is much more stable and safer than hydroquinone itself and can therefore be used regularly for a long period of time.
