Spotlight on science

Surface texture is, in optical terms, largely a matter of light. A smooth surface reflects it evenly; an uneven one scatters it, which the eye reads as dullness and coarseness.

The outermost layer of skin is made of dead cells that are continually shed and replaced. When that turnover slows, as it does with age or environmental stress, the cells accumulate unevenly and the surface loses its uniformity. What appears as roughness is, in large part, this build-up disrupting the way light meets the skin.

Texture and tone tend to travel together, too. Skin that reads as rough is often uneven in colour as well, because the same slowed turnover that roughens the surface also allows pigment to linger. It is why texture and tone are so often considered side by side, as two visible expressions of the same underlying process.
