Spotlight on science

The visible changes associated with age are, in large part, a record of oxidation. Ultraviolet light, pollution and ordinary metabolism all generate free radicals: unstable molecules carrying an unpaired electron, which makes them highly reactive with the compounds around them. Oxidation of this kind is one of the most studied processes in skin science.

Antioxidants are the molecules that interrupt it, donating an electron to stabilise a free radical rather than letting the reaction continue. The limitation is specificity: free radicals take many forms, active in different environments, and no single antioxidant answers all of them. Some work in water, others in lipid; some neutralise one species efficiently and another barely at all.

This is why antioxidants are studied in combination.
