Blemish-prone skin is often over-treated. The instinct is to strip oil away as thoroughly as possible, but skin tends to respond by producing more, and a barrier left raw becomes more reactive rather than less. Much of the redness and tightness associated with blemish-prone skin comes from how it is treated, not from the skin itself.
The underlying science is one of balance. Oil, or sebum, is not the enemy it is often made out to be: it is part of how the skin protects itself, and aggressive attempts to remove it disturb the barrier that keeps skin clear and calm in the first place.
