Key ingredients

Ceramide Complex

Ceramide Complex supplies the same lipids that make up around half the skin barrier's structure, the mortar that holds surface cells together.

Squalane

Squalane is a lightweight lipid near-identical to one the skin produces itself, absorbing without grease or residue.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide, a form of Vitamin B3, is among the most researched ingredients in skincare, valued across barrier support, tone and oil balance.

Spotlight on science

The skin barrier is often described as brick-and-mortar, and the comparison is a good one.

The bricks are corneocytes, flattened and hardened skin cells, and the mortar is a matrix of lipids that holds them together. That lipid mortar is roughly half ceramides, alongside cholesterol and fatty acids, in a ratio the barrier depends upon to stay watertight.

When the barrier is compromised, it is usually the mortar that has run short. This is why replenishing lipids works as it does: supplied from outside, they settle into the same matrix they came from, reinforcing it rather than resting on the surface.

It is also why barrier care is about working to restore a structure, and the balance of components that structure relies on.

Overnight is when the skin is left undisturbed for hours, with no cleansing, no sun and no friction, which is why the final step of the day is where barrier-focused ingredients can often do their best work.
