Spotlight on science

Skin tone is the product of a pigment called melanin, made by specialised cells in the lower epidermis and passed upward toward the surface. Where that pigment is produced evenly, tone reads as uniform. Where it is not, it appears as spots and patches.

Unevenness has several triggers. Ultraviolet exposure drives pigment cells to overproduce, which is how sun spots form. Hormonal shifts, common in pregnancy or with the contraceptive pill, can switch on patches of discolouration. And inflammation, following a blemish or injury, can leave a lingering mark where pigment was overproduced during healing. Different causes, one visible result: pigment laid down unevenly, and slow to disperse once present.

It is this variety of cause that shapes the science of tone. Because pigment can be triggered by so many different routes, it is rarely addressed by a single means, which is why research in this area has increasingly favoured combinations that work across more than one of them at once.
