Spotlight on science

Firmness in skin comes largely from two proteins in the dermis: collagen, which provides structure, and elastin, which allows skin to return to shape after it moves. Both are produced by fibroblasts, the resident cells of the dermis, and both decline gradually with age as production slows and existing fibres are broken down faster than they are replaced. Much of what appears to be loosening or lined skin is this shift becoming visible.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks from which collagen and elastin are assembled. Their interest to skin science lies in signalling rather than in supplying material: certain sequences resemble the fragments that appear when collagen breaks down, which has made them a longstanding focus of research. Some are especially notable for occurring naturally in the body, where they too grow scarcer with age.

What distinguishes peptides is how they work. Rather than resurfacing or exfoliating the skin, they act as signals, which is why they tend to be well tolerated even where stronger actives are not.
