Spotlight on science

Not all pigmentation behaves the same way, and the difference often comes down to depth. Pigment that sits in the upper layers of the skin is relatively accessible, and tends to fade more readily. Pigment that reaches the deeper dermal layer is far more stubborn, held below the surface where it is slow to disperse and resistant to much of what is applied on top.

This is why some discolouration lifts within weeks while other marks persist for years.

Post-inflammatory pigmentation left after a blemish, and certain hormonally driven patches, often reach that deeper layer, which is what makes them so difficult to shift. The visible mark is only the surface of a process that extends well below it, and addressing pigment at that depth is a gradual process.
